Cage in the Canary
Creatures with the Cage Inside
We are creatures, creatures with a social gaze. Our identities are born out of interdependencies. Our sense of freedom is relative. We balance our desires, our need for excitement with our need to be safe, fed and loved – like an old family dog lounging in front of the hearth. Animals in a zoo speak of this to me, their wild ways caged, their foibles pampered. We may be on the other side of the bars, but we too like to assemble our own sense of boundary, of longing and belonging, of open pastures and cubby holes behind the safety of bars. In this set, the photos come in two by two a bit like the Ark – an interdependent couple, a call and response.
